Protection Relay Engineer
Position Overview:
NS Engineers is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Protection Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the planning, configuration, testing, and maintenance of power system protection schemes. This role involves working with various protective relays, relay coordination, and system protection strategies for substations and industrial power systems.
Note: Candidates with strong experience in Testing & Commissioning (even if they do not have direct relay testing experience) are also encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities:
System Protection & Relay Coordination:
- Design and implement protection schemes for electrical power systems including transmission, distribution, and industrial networks.
- Perform relay coordination studies and protection setting calculations.
- Conduct protection audits and analysis of power system faults.
Relay Testing & Configuration:
- Test and calibrate protective relays (numerical, electromechanical, and microprocessor-based) using test kits like OMICRON, Megger, etc.
- Perform primary and secondary injection testing and analyze protection relay operations.
- Prepare and update relay settings, configuration files, and protection logics (IEC 61850-based systems preferred).
Technical Documentation & Analysis:
- Develop and maintain protection schematics, logic diagrams, and relay setting documentation.
- Review protection and control drawings, and provide feedback to design and engineering teams.
- Prepare test reports, protection coordination charts, and other technical documentation.
Site Work & Commissioning:
- Visit project sites for the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of protection systems.
- Provide on-site technical guidance to the execution team and clients.
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards during field activities.
Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of power system protection principles and fault analysis.
- Experience with relay coordination software such as ETAP, PowerFactory, or PSCAD.
- Hands-on experience with testing tools such as OMICRON Test Universe, Megger, or similar.
- Familiarity with SCADA, substation automation, and IEC 61850 protocols.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate in cross-functional teams.
Experience:
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in Testing & Commissioning of electrical systems.
- Experience in relay testing and protection systems is preferred, but not mandatory.
- Candidates with solid Testing & Commissioning experience and a willingness to learn protection systems are welcome.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Professional certifications in protection systems or relay testing are an added advantage.
